A South African judge sentenced two white police detectives to be hanged for the murders of two nonwhite drug dealers. Capt. Jack la Grange, 40, and Sgt. Robert van der Merwe, 30, were found guilty of killing Bennie Ogle last September and Peter Pillay in October. The police officers were among a handful of whites sentenced to die for killing nonwhites. Van der Merwe admitted carrying out the killings but said he was acting under orders from La Grange, who told him the men were drug smugglers, arms dealers and members of the outlawed African National Congress.
