Conrad’s cartoon depicting Israeli soldiers preventing Jesus from entering Jerusalem (“Jerusalem is a closed military area!” March 30) is objectionable on so many grounds that one wonders whether he is malicious or merely ignorant.

To dredge up during Easter week the ugly canard of Jewish opposition to the peaceful mission of Jesus--historically a time when anti-Jewish passions were aroused--is thoroughly offensive.

So too is the implicit suggestion that this year’s cancellation of the annual pilgrimage along the Via Dolorosa was made by Israeli military authorities. The decision was made by the Latin Patriarchate, fearing that attempts would be made to disrupt the procession.

The portrayal of robed ancients restricted at the gates of Jerusalem by Israeli military forces is inciteful, and to suggest that Jerusalem is closed to religious worship is pure fabrication.

In his attempts to examine the current situation in Israel, Conrad has drawn upon familiar images and symbols, but has consistently used them to evoke the most vicious of associations.
