Police today arrested Juan Ramon Matta, a Honduran wanted by the United States in the 1985 torture-murder of U.S. Drug Enforcement agent Enrique Camarena Salazar in Guadalajara, Mexico, his lawyer said.

Lawyer Carlos Lorenzana said about 60 policemen, supported by army helicopters, raided Matta’s luxurious home in Tegucigalpa before dawn and captured him and seven bodyguards. He said Matta was taken to a special police unit headquarters at the village of La Venta, where he was being questioned. Matta, reportedly a top operative for Colombia’s Medellin drug cartel, is a Honduran citizen and the constitution prohibits his extradition.
