The Colleges : Suckling Leads UC Irvine Golf to Team Title

Mike Suckling shot a 36-hole total of 148 to help the UC Irvine men’s golf team to a one-stroke team victory in the ninth annual UC Irvine Invitational at Big Canyon Country Club in Newport Beach.

Irvine’s five-man team shot 609, edging USC (610) to give the Anteaters their first team championship in the tournament. The Anteaters have been second three times and third three times.

Suckling, a freshman, shot 74 in each 18-hole round. Cal State Northridge’s Tony Chieffo was the tournament’s medalist, shooting 147.

Irvine’s Craig Inaba shot 152 to place fifth and Price Shoemaker shot 154 to place 11th.

Cal State Long Beach was third with a score of 616, Cal State Northridge was fourth at 617 and Pepperdine and United States International University tied for fifth at 622. Cal State Fullerton was ninth at 633.
