Soviet authorities allowed 944 Jews to emigrate last month, the highest monthly figure since July, 1981, the Intergovernmental Committee for Migration reported. “It almost equals the record of July, 1981, when 1,075 Soviet Jews were allowed to emigrate,” a committee spokeswoman told reporters. It marked the second straight monthly increase in emigration. The Vienna-based agency said that 723 Jews left the Soviet Union in February and 658 emigrated in January, bringing the total this year so far to 2,325. Last year, 8,011 Jews were allowed to leave the Soviet Union, the highest number since 1981.
