Police with bullhorns and a fleet of tow trucks early today rousted hundreds of Grateful Dead fans sleeping in a downtown park and told them to leave the city amid complaints of drug abuse and littering.

The “Dead Heads,” fans so devoted they follow the rock band around the national concert circuit, drifted toward illegally parked buses and vans as the tow trucks waited to remove stragglers’ vehicles. The Grateful Dead played three sold-out concerts this week at the Hartford Civic Center and the city allowed fans for the second year to camp in the park.
