Suspect in Slaying of U.S. Drug Agent Imprisoned in Ill.
An alleged international drug kingpin trafficker wanted for questioning in the torture-murder of a U.S. drug agent was imprisoned today in the maximum-security federal penitentiary at Marion, Ill., authorities said. He had been picked up in a helicopter raid at his home in Honduras Tuesday.
Juan Ramon Matta Ballesteros, 43, was lodged in a cell at Marion, which the federal prison system uses to house its most dangerous criminals, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Prisons said.
Honduran police arrested Matta at his home in Tegucigalpa on Tuesday and put him on a flight headed for the Dominican Republic, where he was arrested by U.S. marshals aboard a New York-bound jetliner after being kicked out of the Dominican Republic by officials there.
