Fierce clashes in Lebanon between pro-Syrian Shia Amal militiamen and the Iranian-backed Hezbollah (Party of God) left at least 16 combatants dead and another 27 wounded in two days of fighting, Lebanese security sources said. Scores of residents fled Nabatiyeh as the rival groups fought for control of the town, 33 miles southeast of Beirut. The battle followed a seven-hour encounter Tuesday that was described as the fiercest fighting between the two groups in their long struggle for control of southern Lebanon.
