Baby Boomers and No-Growth

I was informed by this writer that slow-growth proposals currently being reviewed have nothing to do with traffic or environmental concerns; rather, the system is being rigged by a bunch of old people to keep struggling yuppies out on their planned communities in the suburbs. The writer ended with suggesting that said yuppies should band together, to make the old people give them everything they want.

That letter missed a couple of points. Slow-growth proposals are designed to keep the quality of life as high as possible for as many people in Southern California, while ensuring that the fragile environment isn’t wrecked in the process. Without such farsighted ideas, massive development would pave over the remaining open spaces, and erect phalanxes of condos so dense that living in one would seem like a prison sentence.

Since I was born in 1961, I qualify as a tail-end baby boomer. However, I know there is no evil plot being hatched by ancient Los Angeles cabals to freeze me out of a good job, or a home. The question is one of competition. No one owes me a perfect home in a nice quiet neighborhood. I have to work for what I want, as should everyone else. And sometimes, no matter how hard one works, things aren’t going to fall into place. Such is life in these United States.
