A cold front that stirred up hurricane-force winds in the Midwest spread rain across the mid-Atlantic states and Ohio Valley and produced gusts of up to 115 m.p.h. in Dixie, while part of the nation’s midsection basked in record heat. Temperatures soared into the 80s in the Dakotas--more than 30 degrees above normal. Record highs for the date were set in five states across the central and northern plains, including 85-degree readings at Aberdeen, S.D., and Sioux City, Iowa, and an 80-degree reading at Minot, S.D. Rain covered most of Virginia, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Ohio during the morning. The cold front that had produced high winds Wednesday that whipped the Chicago area moved to the South, where winds were clocked at 69 m.p.h. over the mountains, with 115-m.p.h. gusts.
