San Salvador’s archbishop, Arturo Rivera y Damas, said that human rights crimes are on the rise in El Salvador. “The impression I have is that yes, there has been an increase in the violation of human rights,” he said in his Sunday homily. He said that during the last week, one civilian was killed by right-wing death squads and three civilians were slain by the military. In addition, 36 presumed leftist guerrillas were killed, he added. The archbishop also criticized the guerrillas for their tactics of economic sabotage.
