An association of coaches urged that Primo Nebiolo resign as president of the Italian Track and Field Federation, after a scandal over a falsified long jump result at the 1987 World Championships in Rome.

A statement by the association, which includes coaches of most Italian track and field clubs, said the resignation of Nebiolo is “needed at this point to recover some credibility among the sporting world.”

Nebiolo also heads the International Amateur Athletic Federation (IAAF).

The request, after a meeting of association leaders Sunday, followed a much-criticized decision by the federation not to take disciplinary action against six of its members accused of falsifying the long jump result to ensure Italy’s Giovanni Evangelisti a bronze medal.

The Italian Track and Field Federation accepted resignations of the officials accused of fixing the result but did not punish anyone.

Nebiolo was not named in the investigation, but some sports newspapers have claimed he had “moral responsibility” in attempts to cover up the scandal.
