The World : ‘War of Cities’ Heats Up
Iran and Iraq engaged in the heaviest missile barrage in 10 days in their “war of the cities.” Iraq said it fired six long-range missiles into Tehran and two other Iranian cities, and Iran said it retaliated by firing two missiles into Baghdad. Both sides reported civilian casualties but gave no specific figures. Meanwhile, shipping executives in Bahrain said a 10-mile stretch of the central Persian Gulf has been declared a navigational hazard area because of suspected mines. The Navy frigate Samuel B. Roberts hit a mine in the area Thursday, rekindling fears that Iran is again mining shipping lanes in the gulf.
