A Mexican judge declared government-owned Aeromexico bankrupt and ordered it into receivership, leaving the airline’s more than 9,200 workers jobless. The decision followed a strike by the airline’s technical workers that shut down the airline on April 12 in protest of management plans to reduce the fleet and route system to bring Aeromexico back into the black. The airline filed a petition for bankruptcy on Friday, saying it was losing $1 million a day because of the strike. Civil Court Judge Sergio Higuera Mota issued the bankruptcy decree, the Department of Communications and Transportation announced. President Miguel de la Madrid said the bankruptcy petition was not an isolated case but part of a new policy to sell, cut out or close down all money-losing companies and agencies owned or operated by the government.
