A government advisory board has refused to grant landmark status to the farm where Whittaker Chambers said he kept the famed “pumpkin papers” linking Alger Hiss to Communist activities.

Because the National Park Service traditionally lets 50 years elapse between a famous incident and a landmark designation, its advisory board decided Tuesday to reject a proposal to confer such status on Chambers’ 390-acre Pipe Creek Farm near Westminster, Md.
