Attorneys for reputed Colombian drug lord Carlos Lehder, 38, rested their case without calling any witnesses to counter 22 weeks of testimony in Jacksonville, Fla., that their client ran a vast cocaine-smuggling empire. Defense attorney Edward R. Shohat rested on the defense’s first day after filing documents on deals the government made to get testimony from some of the 115 prosecution witnesses, many of them admitted smugglers. Stephen J. Weinbaum, an attorney for co-defendant Jack Reed, 57, of San Pedro, Calif., also rested his case without calling any witnesses.
