The Johannesburg Star ran a front-page picture of South African-born runner Zola Budd with her former coach, Fanie Van Zyl, at a road race in South Africa last New Year’s Eve.

Budd, who became a British subject just before the 1984 Olympics, faces suspension from international competition for maintaining links with her homeland. She did not participate in the race, but there have been reports that she received flowers from fans and signed autographs, possibly breaking the spirit of the anti-apartheid stance of the International Amateur Athletic Federation, track’s governing body.
