Police arrested 18 Buddhist nuns who staged anti-Chinese protests in the capital of Tibet last month, the official Tibet Daily reported. The nuns paraded around Lhasa’s Jokhang Temple crying out “Independent Tibet!” and calling for the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled into exile in 1959, according to the April 25 edition of the newspaper, which has just reached Beijing. Twelve nuns demonstrated April 17 and six more a week later, the paper said. All were arrested and are under investigation. Thousands of Tibetans demanding independence from China clashed with riot police March 5, resulting in at least five deaths.
