Shia Amal militiamen exchanged heavy fire with pro-Iranian Hezbollah militants today, shattering a brief Syrian-sponsored cease-fire and leaving at least 29 dead and 50 wounded, police said.

Residents of Beirut’s battered southern suburbs begged Syrian forces to step in to halt the fighting for control of Beirut’s south suburbs, which police said has left at least 159 dead and 450 wounded since fighting erupted Friday morning. Iran and Syria late Monday arranged a fragile cease-fire that generally was honored Tuesday. But shortly after midnight, Amal artillery gunners opened fire on Hezbollah fortifications.
