A gangster was sentenced today to a maximum term of 27 years to life in prison for killing a Chinese-American journalist in 1984, an act he testified was ordered by the Taiwanese government.

Tung Kuei-sen, a member of the International United Bamboo Gang, was ordered to serve the prison sentence for the murder of Henry Liu after he completes a 20-year sentence for heroin smuggling. Tung was convicted by a jury in March after admitting he gunned down Liu in the garage of the dissident writer’s home in Daly City on Oct. 15, 1984. During his trial he said he believed that he was killing a traitor on order from Taiwan’s government.
