The number of AIDS cases worldwide increased at least 72% in 1987 and the deadly disease has invaded virtually every area of the world, federal health officials reported today.

The national Centers for Disease Control said 136 countries and territories had reported a total of 84,256 cases of acquired immune deficiency syndrome to the World Health Organization between 1979 and March 21. Only 37 countries or territories have not reported cases of AIDS. The federal health agency said that the 72% increase in AIDS in 1987 is based on incomplete figures and that the number could increase. In 1986, AIDS cases worldwide rose 92%, and in 1985 the figure was 110%.
