Four letters (May 8) provoke response.

Writers of those letters are unhappy that Soviet representatives engage in frank but friendly dialogue with American “average Joes.” They are suspicious.

Aren’t they missing the point? Current reality faced by both superpowers suggests that “you can’t trust the Russians” is irrelevant. The question now is not can either side trust “the enemy,” but can we trust our common enemy, the threat of nuclear extinction?

Isn’t it time we earthlings grow beyond tribal thinking? Isn’t our global human concern finding amicable ways of living together before we blow ourselves and perhaps all alive into oblivion?
