Indian police killed three Sikhs in a gun battle with separatists besieged inside the Golden Temple at Amritsar as the Punjab governor, S. S. Ray, issued a warning for the militants to surrender or die. Ray said from the Punjab state capital Chandigarh that security forces will launch “a real offensive” against about 100 militants holed up since Monday in the holiest shrine of the Sikh faith. Nearly 30 people have been killed in the weeklong confrontation--mostly militants fighting for an independent Sikh homeland called Khalistan (the Land of the Pure).
