Peruvian President Alan Garcia has named a new Cabinet, the government’s official gazette reported in Lima. The 15-member Cabinet resigned en masse a week ago after strident criticism from opposition parties that accused Garcia and his ministers of failing to halt Peru’s economic decline or control guerrilla violence. Garcia named retired Adm. Juan Soria Diaz as interior minister with responsibility for the government’s fight against leftist guerrillas, whose eight-year insurgency has cost more than 10,000 lives. Soria Diaz has previously served as president of the joint military command and his selection was seen as a sign the government will implement tougher anti-insurgency policies.
