South Korea might import foreign beef again in a bid to help ease trade friction with the United States and Australia, Korean officials said. Imports of American and Australian beef, which in 1984 amounted to 26,000 tons worth $9 million, were cut off by South Korea in 1985 and no foreign beef has entered the country since. Economic Planning Board officials said South Korea might lift the ban in June or July. “Domestic prices for beef cattle have soared these days, and we need to import about 15,000 tons of beef to meet this year’s demand,” an EPB official said.
