10 Die in S. Africa Gold Mine Accident

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa —
Ten black gold miners were hurled from an underground elevator Saturday and fell to their deaths at the bottom of a mile-deep mine shaft, officials said Sunday.
Martin Fallon, a spokesman for the Rand Mines Group, said the accident happened when the descending elevator cage hit an obstruction at the Harmony gold mine.
