Following protests by news organizations, the Amateur Basketball Assn. of the United States agreed to allow expanded coverage of the U.S. Olympic basketball trials.

The organization said no more than eight reporters will be allowed to observe the tryouts which begin Wednesday in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Earlier, the association had said reporters would have access to the players only on the first and last day of the 10-day trials. Coach John Thompson also was to participate in a conference call each day and a May 22 scrimmage at Denver’s McNichols Arena was to be open to the press.

The three-day pool coverage was added to that list following protests from the United States Basketball Writers Assn., the Associated Press, the Associated Press Sports Editors and several newspapers.
