G. William Cox, who resigned as managing editor of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin in 1986 after revealing he was suffering from AIDS, died Friday at his home in Manhattan Beach. He was 39.
Cox resigned from the Star-Bulletin on Sept. 2, 1986, saying he was unable to continue working because he was suffering from Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.
During his tenure at the Star-Bulletin, Cox fought for reporters’ access to government records and meetings so they could keep the public informed.
Cox joined the Star-Bulletin in January, 1984, after serving five years as city editor of The Courier-Journal in Louisville, Ky. He was a 1971 graduate of the University of Missouri.
