Claims Taken for Damages from Erosion

Share

If you have flood insurance in effect on your property on or before June 1 and the building is subject to “imminent collapse or subsidence” as a result of erosion, you may be eligible for claim payments from the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

Under provisions of the Housing and Community Development Act of 1987, owners of such buildings may make a claim to relocate or demolish the structure if the flood insurance is in place.

After June 1 flood insurance has to be in effect for two years--or the period of ownership if less--before the building is condemned or certified to be subject to collapse or subsidence. The NFIP is administered by the Federal Insurance Administration, but flood insurance may be purchased through any licensed insurance agent or broker.
