Erickson Wins Decathlon, Qualifies for U.S. Trials

Steve Erickson of Bellevue, Wash., won the Point Loma Nazarene Invitational Decathlon Saturday and qualified for the U.S. Olympic trials in Indianapolis, July 15-23, with 7,936 points.

San Diego’s Tony Allen-Cooksey was second with 7,748 points, and Marty Honea, also of San Diego, was third with 7,056. Neither reached the qualifying standard of 7,800.

TENNIS

The doubles team of Melinda Ainslie and Traci Reynolds of Point Loma Nazarene College will be competing in the NAIA national women’s tennis championships beginning Monday at Kansas City, Mo.

Ainslie and Reynolds earned the trip by winning the NAIA District III title.

The final of the single-elimination doubles draw will be played next Saturday.

Top-seeded Jim Perely of Coronado and Lynn Saputo of Walnut Creek won in the semifinals of the Men’s 45 National Hard Court championships at the Lindborg Racquet Club in Huntington Beach.

Perely defeated No. 7 Jeff Schubert of Phoenix, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. Saputo, the No. 3-seeded player, defeated No. 2 Billy Higgens of Yorba Linda, 7-3, 6-3. The final is today at 11 a.m.

GOLF

The City of Hope’s Golf-a-Rama ’88 coupon book offers golfers a free round at each of 10 participating golf courses throughout San Diego County.
