An energetic frog named Jumping John Hancock Special No. 3 won the Calaveras County Fair and Jumping Frog Jubilee, earning $500 for his coach, Gene Fasano of San Jose. The winning leap was 18 feet, 10 1/2 inches in the Olympics of frog jumping, held for 60 years in the Gold Rush community of Angels Camp. Sunday’s jumping culminated three days of frog follies in the town that annually gives life to Mark Twain’s tale of the “Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.”
