HELMSTEDT, West Germany —
An East German was apparently killed when he ran his car at high speed into a border barrier in an attempt to escape to the West, West German police said on Tuesday.
Motorists at the Helmstedt-Marienborn border point Monday evening saw an East German car hit a lowered road-crossing boom on the Marienborn side, the West German border police said.
The car was badly damaged and the covered body of its driver was seen being carried from the scene by East German border troops, a police spokesman said.
