Two white policemen were convicted by a South African court of murdering a black youth after beating him so severely they did not dare let him go free. The convicted men, Warrant Officer Leon de Villiers, 36, and Constable David Goosen, 26, could face the death penalty in sentencing this week. Eight members of a police riot squad testified against the two at the trial in Grahamstown. Witnesses said the victim, Wheanut Stuurman, 18, was one of a group of blacks arrested at random and tortured near Cradock in July, 1986. Stuurman was badly beaten, and De Villiers told Goosen he should be “taken out.” Goosen shot him and threw him into a river.
