ANALYSTS AROUSED

I take issue with your choice of reviewers. Although I have no quarrel with Peter J. Swales’ credentials, I do object to his subjective review of Peter Gay’s “Freud: A Life for Our Time” (Book Review, May 8).

In view of the fact that psychoanalysts are, in general, magnificently learned and wondrously articulate, I would hope that in the future, The Times might find a reviewer with no overt vested interest in his subject. Both psychoanalytic institutes (Southern California and Los Angeles) no doubt possess such potential reviewers in their membership.
