Share

Sri Lankan Sinhalese radicals killed 10 people in stepped-up attacks aimed at disrupting provincial council elections to be held this week and next, police said. About 30 gunmen from the People’s Liberation Front stormed the house of a ruling United National Party candidate at Homagama, near Colombo, and killed six people in a hail of automatic weapons fire, police said. The candidate and his wife were among four people wounded. Earlier, two candidates of the opposition United Socialist Alliance were among four people killed by terrorists outside the party’s office near Matale, 50 miles south of Colombo. The Sinhalese radicals oppose a peace agreement with minority Tamils seeking a separate state.
