Pakistani President Zia ul-Haq accused the ousted prime minister and his government of incompetence and corruption. Zia, who dismissed Prime Minister Mohammed Khan Junejo, his 33-member Cabinet and the 210-seat National Assembly on Sunday, said he fired them because they had failed to reduce crime or improve the economy. Zia charged that Junejo had to bribe his supporters and lawmakers with favors that led to “unprecedented corruption at all levels.” The former prime minister responded that Zia violated democratic principles in dissolving the government.
