Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Fumes Cause Workers to Flee From Plant

About 35 employees at Laura Scudder’s corporate headquarters were evacuated Wednesday after fumes from a petroleum-based roofing material seeped into the firm’s ventilation system, a city official said.

A hazardous materials team called to the scene at 1525 N. Raymond Ave. cleared the building of the nasal irritant, which is harmful only if inhaled within a closed space, city spokesman Patrick Denny said.

The evacuation was triggered by an odor at the facility, said Lisa Reed, the firm’s employee relations manager. About half the employees who left returned the same day, she said.

The company was bought in 1987 by Borden Inc., which closed the manufacturing end of the Anaheim facility and laid off 300 employees.
