El Salvador’s president, Jose Napoleon Duarte, has cancer and is “a man on the verge of death,” the country’s acting president said. Vice President Rodolfo Castillo Claramount, who took over after Duarte, 62, was flown to Washington for treatment, told a news conference in San Salvador that Duarte has “a cancerous bleeding ulcer in his stomach” and that the cancer has spread to his liver. He said officials learned of Duarte’s condition in a call from his son, Alejandro. An official prognosis is to be issued today by doctors at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
