An apparent weeklong drug operation run by guests at the Bahia Resort Hotel was broken up by law enforcement officers shortly before noon Saturday when a 2-year-old girl was unable to wake up her mother at the request of a hotel security guard.

San Diego police spokesman Bill Robinson said guests of the West Mission Bay Drive resort had complained to management about loud noise and partying in one of the rooms. A hotel security guard knocked on the door of the room about 11:20 a.m. and the little girl, Ashley Kummers, answered.

At the guard’s instructions, Ashley attempted to wake up her mother, Tammie Kummers, and her mother’s boyfriend, Jamie Stiles, Robinson said. When the couple could not be awakened, San Diego police were called to the hotel.

Inside the room, police found cocaine, marijuana, drug paraphernalia and $5,042 in cash, Robinson said. Found in Stiles’ wallet were hundreds of expense receipts for big-ticket merchandise, such as power tools, Robinson said.

Stiles, 22, and Tammie Kummers, 20, were arrested on suspicion of sale of narcotics and on possession of narcotics for sale, Robinson said. He added that the Green Bay, Wis., couple had been living in the hotel room for about a week, where police believe they were conducting lucrative drug transactions.

Ashley was turned over to authorities at the Hillcrest Receiving Home.
