Britain and Iran will hold two days of talks this week to try to settle each side’s financial claims over damaged diplomatic property, a British Foreign Office spokesman said. He said Britain will probably agree to pay Iran about $1.8 million for damage to its London embassy. Iran wants about $3.2 million for damage caused when the building was burned out as members of Britain’s elite SAS force stormed it in 1980 to end a hostage siege. Britain, in turn, is seeking about $1.6 million for damage to British diplomatic premises in Iran that were attacked by mobs.
