The European Community has opened investigations into alleged cut-price dumping in Europe by Japanese makers of two kinds of machines used mainly in the building industry.
European producers who had seen profits dwindle or were facing losses as prices were forced down have complained about 17 Japanese manufacturers of small hydraulic excavators and seven makers of wheeled loaders.
The opening of the investigations was the 12-nation EC’s second anti-dumping move against Japan in eight days and preceded a visit by Prime Minister Noburu Takeshita to Brussels on Tuesday. EC officials said they did not expect the decisions to sour the atmosphere during Takeshita’s first Brussels visit since his appointment in November 1987.
