Human Rights at the Summit

Reagan’s criticism of the Soviet Union on human rights and the article concerning Japan’s racial discrimination of Koreans (“Japanese Student in U.S. to Defy Her Country’s Rules for Koreans,” Part I, May 31) helps prove a point: We are very passive about vocalizing our indignation about human rights abuses among our allies!
Japan is well known for its blatant sex and racial discrimination. Third generation Japanese-born Koreans (and other foreigners) are still required to register as aliens. There are very few foreigners and women in upper management of large Japanese corporations.
It is simply bad manners to criticize your host on his own home turf. But if we must be “tacky,” then I suggest that President Reagan be fair and give equal criticism to Japan--in Tokyo!
