Duarte to Undergo Surgery
Associated Press
WASHINGTON —
Salvadoran President Jose Napoleon Duarte has decided to undergo exploratory surgery Tuesday to determine the extent of the malignancy in his stomach and liver, a Walter Reed Army Medical Center spokesman said today.
The procedure, called an exploratory laparotomy, allows surgeons to examine closely a patient’s condition and remove some or all of the diseased tissue, according to Pete Esker, medical center spokesman. The 62-year-old Duarte has been hospitalized since last week.
