Obituaries : Dr. J. R. McCarroll; Air Quality Expert

Dr. James R. McCarroll, who served as assistant medical director of the city of Los Angeles from 1973 to 1976, died Saturday of lung cancer at his home in Palm Desert. He was 66.
A graduate of Cornell University Medical College, he devoted much of his career to a study of the health effects of air pollution and was an adviser to the Environmental Protection Agency on air quality standards. While with the city of Los Angeles, he developed preventive and occupational medical programs for city employees.
McCarroll retired as a professor at Stanford Medical School in 1984.
He is survived by a niece, Deborah Christensen Stewart of Los Angeles, and a nephew, Thomas Christensen of Pennsylvania.
A memorial Mass will be offered at 7:30 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Church in Palm Desert.
