NutraSweet Co. said it received approval from the Food and Drug Administration to use its sugar substitute in six new product categories. The approvals enable food and beverage manufacturers to offer new products in areas of strong consumer demand, said Robert Shapiro, chairman of NutraSweet, which is a subsidiary of Monsanto Co. The categories approved include yogurt-type products; refrigerated flavored-milk beverages; ready-to-serve non-refrigerated, pasteurized, aseptically packaged diluted fruit juice beverages; refrigerated ready-to-serve gelatin desserts; fruit wine beverages (coolers) containing less than 7% alcohol, and frozen desserts, both dairy and non-dairy.
