The Navy selected Newport News Shipbuilding over another company to build two nuclear-powered attack submarines and awarded the Newport News, Va., company a $612-million contract to complete work by August, 1993. Newport’s bid was chosen over that of the Electric Boat division of General Dynamics in Groton, Conn., to build the SSN-688 Los Angeles class submarines, the Navy said. A spokesman said the Navy is negotiating with Electric Boat to build the third SSN-688 submarine authorized by Congress for 1988.
