The article on the “Old Governor’s Mansion Returned to the People” (May 15) by Michele and Tom Grimm failed to mention that this Victorian showplace was also the boyhood home of Lincoln Steffens, the magazine editor and author of “The Shame of the Cities,” 1904, and “Upbuilders,” 1909. His father, Joseph Steffens, bought the mansion in 1888 and after having raised his family, sold it to the state of California in 1903.
