Police have captured the No. 2 leader of the Shining Path, a fanatical Maoist group that has waged a guerrilla war against the government for eight years, a government minister said today.

Osman Morote, 42, was arrested Sunday at a house in downtown Lima along with two women, Deputy Interior Minister Agustin Mantilla said. The capture is considered the most important since the Shining Path launched its guerrilla war in 1980. Since then the violence has claimed more than 10,000 lives.
