A Mexicali man who was struck in the head by a bullet fired from a passing car in Santa Ana Sunday was breathing Monday on a mechanical support system at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, hospital officials said, but his brain-wave activity has ceased.

Ralph Moore, 20, was still listed in critical condition, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Hospital officials were awaiting the arrival of Moore’s grandmother from Mexico before removing him from the support machine, Santa Ana police spokeswoman Maureen Thomas said.

She said police have no motive or suspects in the shooting, which investigators consider an attempted murder.

Moore’s mother, who lives in Los Angeles, said her son had been visiting her and his sister for about a week and had planned to return home soon to Mexicali. Police said Moore had been staying with his sister on Camille Street in Santa Ana.

Moore was shot once in the head with a handgun early Sunday as he and a friend stood in the doorway of a garage of a home at 328 S. Jackson St., Thomas said. Police said the incident may have been related to gang activity, but police have not determined whether the bullet was intended for Moore.
