El Salvador’s President Jose Napoleon Duarte, terminally ill with cancer, has left intensive care after surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center and is “doing very, very well,” Ambassador Ernesto Rivas Gallont said in Washington. “His spirits are very high. He’s surprised everyone in the hospital. Every hour or so he gets up and walks around his suite . . . under his own steam.” Duarte, 62, had two-thirds of his stomach removed a week ago in an operation to stop the spread of the cancer and to relieve him of pain.
